Since he left One Direction almost a year ago, Zayn Malik has never stopped talking about releasing his solo songs which he said he always aspired to do. Along the way, he even commented on his former band stating that the kind of music One Direction releases does not really gel well with his own preferences. Given this, fans have waited for what kind of sound Malik really want to produce. Fortunately, he has already dropped his newest single “PillowTalk” with the promise of a full album come March.
Turns out, Malik is leaning more into RNB, soulful releases, a far cry from his former band’s usual upbeat and funky records. To market the song properly, the singer even sought the help of his current girlfriend, supermodel Gigi Hadid, to appear in the official video.
On top of that, Malik’s release has done something that One Direction has never achieved. “Pillowtalk” has debuted at the number one slot in the singles chart in the U.S., 1D’s highest ranking in the said list was at number two for “Best Song Ever.”
“Thank you to all my fans and supporters. We have achieved this together and I am grateful,” Malik said in a statement. He then took to his official Twitter account to celebrate the momentous occasion tweeting, “What is gwaning 🙂 !! I can’t explain the love and gratitude i feel today, thank you for making this happen.”
However, the 23-year-old singer already made it clear that going solo does not mean that he is trying to prove something against his former bandmates.”I’m massively grateful for that, and if it wasn’t for that, I wouldn’t be here,” Malik said during his visit on Ryan Seacrest’s “On Air with Ryan Seacrest.”It’s not because I’m trying to be more successful or as successful as what was going on before, because there’s no comparison,” he added.
