Google’s YouTube just launched its very own gaming-centered video streaming site that aims to compete with other popular video streaming sites available.
The new website for gaming videos, gaming.youtube.com, went live Wednesday evening, and as it name implies, it focuses mainly on showing videos that are related to video gamesit even has a section for each of the popular current and also upcoming games. Clicking on a title will take users to a playlist of videos pertaining to that certain game. Searching is also optimized, as auto fill suggestions will be optimized to show game-related suggestions.
According to a report by BBC News, this launch by YouTube is the company “fighting back” against now popular gaming videos streaming sites Twitch and Daily Motion. The YouTube Gaming service features around 25,000 game channels, and is also available via a mobile application.
“We wanted to create a one-stop shop for all gaming content,” Ryan Wyatt, YouTube’s head of gaming said, via BBC News. “At the moment there is a fragmented experience. People go to different places for live content, and YouTube for video on demand. We have amazing gamers that don’t live stream yet. Now they have that opportunity.”
However, the launch of the new YouTube Gaming service does not affect the number of game related videos on YouTube in any way, as there are already a lot of gaming related videos on the main site such as game reviews, walkthrough videos, trailers, and the like.
“We’re not treating gaming any differently on YouTube,” Wyatt said. “The app is a lens for gaming content, the key thing is discoverability. This is a way to focus on gaming videos, aggregate them, but YouTube doesn’t change. You can still watch gaming videos on YouTube.”
“We created a live platform that will benefit all of YouTube,” he added. “I can picture sports, beauty tutorials, live cooking streams.”
