Hong Kong action star Donnie Yen recently joined the cast of the upcoming sequel and reboot film “xXx: The Return of Xander Cage.” However, the arrival of the actor was rumored to be due to the sudden departure of previously announced member of the cast, Chinese martial arts superstar Jet Li.

Just recently, “xXx: The Return of Xander Cage” main star Vin Diesel shared a behind the scenes photo of the film’s production process on his Facebook account, showing him with Hong Kong star Donnie Yen. While Diesel’s Facebook did not reveal any more details as to the casting of Donnie Yen, it appears that he went in to replace someone who was supposed to be the film’s villain.

According to a report by Twitch Film, sources close to the film’s production process revealed that Donnie Yen came to join the roster of cast for the film in order to fill in for the role of the villain that Chinese marital arts superstar Jet Li left behind recently. The report also stated that Jet Li allegedly departed from the film due to yet unknown reasons.

Jet Li was cast a few weeks ago as a villain with an intense fight scene set up between his character and Diesel’s Xander Cage as one of the highlights of the film. Aside from the alleged departure of the actor, the rest of the remaining official cast members remain to be the same.

Other cast member for the upcoming film include Samuel L. Jackson reprising his role as National Security Agency Agent Augustus Gibbons, Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone in her Hollywood debut, and Tony Jaa. Other rumored actors coming to the film include “The Vampire Diaries” star Nina Dobrev and “Orange is The New Black” and “Resident Evil: The Final Chapter” star Ruby Rose.

No release date has been announced for the film so far.
