Vin Diesel is set to once again take on the character of sport extremist turned super spy in his upcoming sequel and soft reboot film “xXx: The Return of Xander Cage.” Just recently, popular martial arts star Donnie Yen officially joined the cast as the film’s villain.

According to a report by Collider, Hong Kong martial arts star Donnie Yen had been officially cast for the film. Yen comes to the roster of actors at a time when filming had already begun. Yen is set to play the role of Xiang and will be an enemy of Vin Diesel’s Xander Cage, described as “an alpha-warrior.”

Yen was previously rumored to be added to the film following the sudden departure of martial arts superstar Jet Li. It was not mentioned if Yen will fill in the shoes of Jet Li or if he will be playing an entirely new character.

The following is the official synopsis for the film:

“The third explosive chapter of the blockbuster franchise that redefined the spy thriller finds extreme athlete turned government operative Xander Cage coming out of self-imposed exile and on a collision course with deadly alpha warrior Xiang and his team in a race to recover a sinister and seemingly unstoppable weapon known as Pandora’s Box. Recruiting an all-new group of thrill-seeking cohorts, Xander finds himself enmeshed in a deadly conspiracy that points to collusion at the highest levels of world governments. Packed with the series’ signature deadpan wit and bad-ass attitude, ‘xXx: The Return of Xander Cage ‘ will raise the bar on extreme action with some of the most mind-blowing stunts to ever be caught on film.”

Other cast members include Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone in her Hollywood debut, Thai marital arts star Tony Jaa, and Samuel L. Jackson as he reprises his role as National Security Agency Agent Augustus Gibbons. Other rumored names to be joining the film include “The Vampire Diaries” star Nina Dobrev and “Orange is The New Black” and “Resident Evil: The Final Chapter” star Ruby Rose.

No release date for the film had been announced as of the moment. “xXx: The Return of Xander Cage” is currently filming in Toronto, Canada, with additional filming to be done in the Dominican Republic.
