Windows 10 mobile news: Update may come on Jan. 12

There are rumors that the over-the-air (OTA) mobile update for Windows 10 will be coming on Jan. 12, along with a new mid-tier device, the Lumia 850.

Earlier rumored to come in late December or early January, Nokia Power User said that a tipster revealed that Microsoft is planning to announce a mobile update on Tuesday next week, which may most likely pertain to Lumia 850. In addition, the company may also either share their plans or better yet, roll out the OTA Windows 10 update of mobile devices still using Windows 8.1

Tech Radar also revealed that there are rumors pertaining to a Windows 10 mobile update in Germany on the same date for the devices Lumia 950, 930, 635, 535, 830, 640 and 640 XL. At this moment, only the recently launched Lumia 950, Lumia 950 XL, and the Lumia 550 are running on Windows 10.

Microsoft revealed before that they are working on the update that will come out “very soon.” In the Lumia support page, it said, “We’re working to make Windows 10 available to eligible Lumia smartphones running Windows Phone 8.1 as an upgrade. If your Lumia is eligible for the upgrade, we’ll let you know when it’s ready,” noted Phone Arena.

The same support page reminded users that not all phones will be able to have the newest operating system because of some features that need a “more advanced future hardware.” The devices need to have at least the version 8.10.14219.341 in order to get the Windows 10 update. Users can see the version of their OS by navigating through the settings, about, and then more information.

As for the devices that will be qualified for the upgrade, Microsoft reminded users that the update will need at least 8GB internal memory.

Fans will have to wait a bit further as no official announcement has been made by Microsoft yet.
