“Thor: Ragnarok” star Jeff Goldblum recently talked about his introduction to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as he takes on the role of a cosmic figure called The Grandmaster . The actor shared his experiences and expectations as he becomes part of the iconic comic book film franchise, alongside main stars Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston and Anthony Hopkins.
In a recent interview with Empire Magazine, actor Goldblum showed off his knowledge about his character, one which he himself had admitted that he is still getting to know. He is hoping to correctly depict the character for not only non-comic book fans but also for avid comic book enthusiasts.
“He’s a hedonist, a pleasure-seeker,” Goldblum said about his character The Grandmaster. “An enjoyer of life and tastes and smells. I thought, ‘I can do that, I’ll bet!’ I’m working on my part every day. I’m a sponge, researching.”
While Goldblum is expected to stick to the basics of the comic book character, Goldblum revealed that film director Taika Waititi had given him enough freedom to tweak the character a little and make it a version that is completely his own.
“[Taika Waititi] is encouraging me to improvise and make it my own, and that’s what I’m trying to do. I hope he doesn’t throw me out on the first day!” he added.
During filming, the actor is expected to spend at least a month on location in Australia with the other cast members of “Thor: Ragnarok.”
“Not only Chris Hemsworth, Cate Blanchett, Anthony Hopkins,” he recalled. “Jeez, that’s gonna be fun. I’ve never been to Australia except to do these little publicity things.”
In the comic books, The Grandmaster is an Elder of the Universe that had been a long known entity to the heroes and villains of the Marvel Universe. He is an occasional villain who partners up with other villains who are willing to play along with his “games.”
“Thor: Ragnarok” is set to hit theaters on Nov. 3, 2017.
