'Winds of Winter' release date: Did Amazon France leak upcoming novel's launch date?

Has the official release date for “The Winds of Winter” been revealed? Reports claim that an Amazon France listing accidentally leaked the release date of George R.R. Martin’s upcoming novel.

According to a screenshot obtained by Independent, the placeholder page for “The Winds of Winter” reveals that the book will be released on March 9, 2017. This sent fans into a frenzy, as the last “A Song of Ice and Fire” book was released five years ago, and readers have been giving the 67-year-old author grief over the novel’s delay over the last few years.

The screenshot was posted on Independent’s website on Tuesday, Sept 6. The purported release date for “The Winds of Winter” has since been deleted on the online retailer’s page.

Martin’s U.S. publisher Random House has issued a statement to Entertainment Weekly about the Amazon France date:

“As his publisher, we support George RR Martin as he works hard to finish ‘The Winds of Winter.’ Any on-sale dates currently listed online are incorrect. Once we have a publication date for ‘The Winds of Winter,’ the world will know.”

Martin and his publishers have always maintained that the author himself will announce the book’s release date once it is ready. Back in January, Martin said on his LiveJournal blog that he will not set another deadline to finish the book.

“I can’t tell you when it will be done, or when it will be published,” the author said. “I am not going to set another deadline for myself to trip over. The deadlines just stress me out…It will be done when it’s done. And it will be as good as I can possibly make it.”

Martin’s post received over a thousand comments from fans, and many expressed their support, thanking the author for the update and telling him to take his time.

One fan wrote, “Thanks for the update. Thanks for the books. Take your time, enjoy your life. We’ll enjoy them when we get them.”

Martin is back in his Santa Fe home after making the rounds at the World Science Fiction Convention (Worldcon) and the Bubonicon Science Fiction and Fantasy Convention last month. The author revealed in a recent blog post that apart from the two conventions, he also had a week of meetings in Los Angeles and other business meetings in August. He also said that he is back at work, and it’s possible that he is writing more chapters for “The Winds of Winter.”

The author also responded to a fan who asked if he will be appearing at Con of Thrones in Nashville next summer. Martin said that he won’t be appearing on any new conventions until the book is done.

“I am not taking on any new cons until I finish WINDS…,” said Martin, adding that he will only be at the next Worldcons as well as other appearances that he has already committed to.
