'The Walking Dead' season 6 news, spoilers: Andrew Lincoln says season 6 finale is one of TWD's 'bleakest'

While its latest episode “The Next World” was decidedly less gruesome than its midseason premiere “No Way Out,” “The Walking Dead” star Andrew Lincoln says that fans should prepare themselves for some “strong” and “tonally different” episodes leading up to a “bleak” season finale.

In an interview with Yahoo! TV, the TWD star revealed how he felt about the surprising new romance between Rick and Michonne (Danai Gurira), the back eight episodes of season 6, and even teases some cameo appearances in the remaining episodes.

On finding out about the new Richonne pairing, which Lincoln called “strange” and “very exciting,” the actor said, “It was thrilling to, obviously, have the scenes at the end with Danai and move into this new relationship, this new space with this familiar old friend.”

But while he said that he hopes for more “lovey scenes” in the back half of season 6, this is, after all, “The Walking Dead,” and that means blood, gore, violence, misery, and a perpetual fight to stay alive in a post-apocalyptic world.

Hinting at what’s to come, Lincoln said, “I think a lot of the last few episodes, I think 14, 15, and 16, are very strong episodes.”

The actor said that he is excited for TWD fans to watch the remaining season 6 episodes, saying that there will be a bunch of surprises. “I think this is one of the strongest and most different, tonally, back eight we’ve ever attempted,” he said. Lincoln went on to tease some “amazing cameos” and some “brilliant actors” who will “only appear in a couple of scenes.”

Though he couldn’t reveal much about the season 6 finale, Lincoln said that it will have a lot of humor while also being “one of the bleakest” episodes of “The Walking Dead” yet. “The final episode is just, we leave the show in a place we’ve never done before,” he said.

“The Walking Dead” airs Sundays at 9 p.m. on AMC.
