“The Vampire Diaries” fans mourned Nina Dobrev’s exit from the show after the sixth season of The CW series, and many have noted that the show wasn’t quite the same without its female lead. Though season 7 had compelling storylines which focused on the Salvatore brothers, viewers missed the chemistry between Elena (Dobrev) and Damon (Ian Somerhalder). Now, it has been reported that Dobrev will be returning to the show for its upcoming eighth season, which also happens to be the last for the supernatural series.
The CW network president Mark Pedowitz told reporters (via E! Online) at the Television Critics Association summer press tour earlier this month that Dobrev was in talks to return to “The Vampire Diaries” in season 8.
“We collectively came to the same place,” said Pedowitz. “We backed [showrunner] Julie [Plec] in her decision…there are discussions going on with Nina, we’d love to have her back.”
Pedowitz added that they were hoping that the actress would come back, but should it not work out, Plec has planned a “great series finale” for fans.
When asked as to how many episodes Elena will appear in the new season, Pedowitz said that Dobrev can return for “as many as Julie thinks she needs her for.” The executive said that they’ve always liked Dobrev on the show and that she was a good spokesperson for “The Vampire Diaries” and The CW.
“But again, if it cannot work out, Julie will take care to have a really satisfactory series finale,” he added.
It appears that the “xXx: Return of Xander Cage” star has been locked in to return to the series, as her IMDb page indicates that she will be appearing in episode 16 of the upcoming season in 2017. The new season will run for 16 episodes, which means that Dobrev would likely make her return in the series finale.
“The Vampire Diaries” season 8 premieres on Oct. 21 on The CW.
