The Smurfs will be getting their third movie next year but the style of the reboot film will be an homage to the cartoon style of the original Peyo Culliford cartoon. Instead of 3D generated Smurfs running around with live action components, the third movie will be a fully animated full length feature.
The third movie, entitled Get Smurfy was greenlighted by Sony Pictures Animation last June 14 during the Global Smurfs Day, reported Entertainment Weekly.
“The continued popularity of the Smurfs is unmistakable, and this new outing will return them to the fully-animated world that launched them,” film director Kelly Asbury said.
Aside from the animation style, there will be some changes in the cast as singer Katy Perry, who provided the voice for the lone female Smurf Smurfette, will be replaced by Demi Lovato.
Homeland’s Mandy Patinkin, for his part, will take a break from fighting off terror plots on television to concentrate on a much lighter assignment bringing to life the character of Papa Smurf. Comedian Rainn Wilson will be the voice of Gargamel, a role previously played by Hank Azaria.
So far, the main details for of the movie can be weaned from its plot summary which reads: “Get Smurfy finds Smurfette and her brothers trekking through the uncharted Enchanted Forest to try and discover a fabled Smurfs village before their nemesis, the evil wizard Gargamel, does. Along the way, some of the mysteries of the little blue creatures’ origins are brought to light: do Smurfs come in any other colors? are their mushroom houses organic? And… why are there 99 boys and only one girl???
Meanwhile, Sony has released the first look of the new cast and the new look of the Smurfs for the upcoming movie.
