'The Originals' season 4 spoilers: Will supernatural series be the next 'The Vampire Diaries'?

With parent series “The Vampire Diaries” tipped to air their eighth and final season, many viewers are wondering whether spin-off “The Originals” will soon be joining the show off-air.

The supernatural drama is headed for its fourth-year outing in a couple of months after its return date was bumped to the midseason block instead of a fall premiere. The reasoning given for the move is to make way for a believable time jump which will be incorporated into the narrative. However, some are speculating that it is merely a marketing agenda to have “The Vampire Diaries” get more attention up until it cruises to its winter hiatus.

Regardless of the real reason, there has been a steady air of buzz surrounding “The Originals'” fate moving forward without its tie-in series. To make matters worse, the coming installment is noticeably shorter installment with only 13 episodes compared to the usual 22.

If The CW’s president, Mark Pedowitz, were to be asked, he wants the show to continue despite no longer having “The Vampire Diaries.” After all, the spin-off may have yet to run its course with just four seasons under its belt, counting the upcoming one while its parent series will close the curtains with eight.

“It could live very well on its own,” The CW boss shared in last month’s Television Critics Association’s summer press tour. “We’ll see how it comes back at midseason. Hopefully it will see a fifth year.”

It is not unusual that spin-offs continue despite its main counterparts already going off the air. Some even outlast their superior with “Law & Order” and “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” as a perfect example. The caveat, however, is that “The Originals” and “The Vampire Diaries” are both very genre-centric which makes for very limited story choices while the police procedurals can go on for years mining day-to-day situations.

Needless to say, fans will be basking in the glory of the upcoming installment of “The Originals” as they see the Mikaelsons break free from their half-decade slumber only to face both new and familiar foes. No official release date has been set for the series.
