Earlier this month, fans of the American drama, mystery, and thriller television series “The Leftovers” found out that the show is renewed for a third season, much to their delight. However, it will also be the final season for the series.
On the same PR page, Lombardo also revealed the reason why the third season is the last. It is attributed to the decision of Damon Lindelof, one of the series creators of the show, to leave the series.
He first praised the creators of “The Leftovers,” saying, “It is with great enthusiasm that we welcome back Damon Lindelof, Tom Perrotta and the extraordinary talent behind ‘The Leftovers’ for its third and final season.”
After which, he elaborated, “This show has proven to be one of the most distinctive HBO series and we are extremely proud of its unrivaled originality, which has resulted in such a passionate following by our HBO viewers. We admire and fully support Damon’s artistic vision and respect his decision to bring the show to its conclusion next season.”
Fans are generally happy about the news as they express how they love and look forward to the upcoming season in the social media’s comment page. However, others are more focused and appalled that “The Leftovess” will be having just one more season.
As for its storyline, no concrete details have been revealed yet, but Lindelof admitted that they will veer away from exploring the sanity of Kevin (Justin Theroux), as what was seen in season 2.
Lindelof said, “I’m not particularly interested in continuing to revisit the ‘Is Kevin crazy?’ idea.” He added, “I kind of feel that the more interesting show at this point is that we’re no longer, we’re done… The sleepwalking was a manifestation of Kevin’s inability to come to terms with all of the trauma that he was dealing with both prior to the departure and post departure,” noted Screen Crush. This is also the reason why Lindelof called it quits after this season.
No release date has been announced regarding “The Leftovers” season 3.
