HBO continues to dominate in more ways than one as the cable network has just unveiled a new show, “Westworld,” this month. Next year, the network will be debuting new installments of its other original shows, including the third and last season of “The Leftovers.” While the series may not have been as popular as “Game of Thrones,” the Justin Theroux starrer has gone on to become a worldwide success, and fans are now counting the days until the new season premieres.
Last week, the series’ official Twitter account confirmed that filming has wrapped in their new location, Melbourne. The Sept. 24 post featured a photo of three director’s chairs with the caption, “Until 2017. @TheLeftoversHBO Season 3 production has wrapped in Melbourne.”
Theroux also celebrated the end of filming by posting an Instagram video which has been edited to look as though a missile falling from the sky landed on the cast and crew of the series, causing a massive explosion. The caption read, “That’s a WRAP. The Leftovers. Season 3. RIP.” The actor also thanked the crew and Australia for letting them film the series finale.
Earlier this year, co-creator Damon Lindelof teased the series finale, saying, “We eventually said, what do we want the last scene of the series to be, who’s in that scene, and what’s happening to that scene?” He added that with season 3, the show is ending, and the last parts of the story will infuse the show with a degree of energy that’s different from past installments.
When asked by Deadline whether the last scene will shock or comfort the show’s fans, the co-creator replied, “Definitely not shock. As for comfort well, that’s all relative.”
The last season will be partially set in Texas and Australia, with the latter being referenced in the season 2 finale as it was revealed that Kevin’s (Theroux) father was heading to Australia after leaving the mental institution in Mapleton. It is expected that Kevin and his father (Scott Glenn) are going to reunite, and where the rest of the population went in the season 1 mass disappearance is expected to be revealed in the new season.
“The Leftovers” season 3 premieres in 2017 on HBO.
