It’s been a long time coming, but the much-anticipated video game “The Last Guardian” is finally about to arrive. Fans who have been waiting for the game’s release will now have a chance to take a peek at the game’s captivating story and impressive graphics with the recent release of its cinematic trailer.
“The Last Guardian” is the concluding chapter of a trilogy that started with the video game “Ico” back in 2001, which was followed by “Shadow of the Colossus” in 2005. The game has been in the works as far back as 2007, initially intended to be a PlayStation 3 (PS3) exclusive. However, after being stuck for nine years in development hell, plans to adapt the game to the PS3 platform were shelved and will now be launched for PS4 instead.
“There were times where even I thought that maybe this game will never come out,” creator Fumito Ueda admitted in an interview with PlayStation Blog, adding, “But there’s a huge sense of relief that it’s done and I’m happy that gamers will be able to play it.”
“At the same time, I’m still waiting for the actual feeling that it’s really done to sink in,” he also shared.
Inspired by the elements of the two earlier titles of the trilogy, “The Last Guardian” is designed as a role-playing video game in which the player will be taking control of an ordinary young boy who discovers a giant half-bird half-mammal creature named Trico. The boy and the fantastical beast will form a special bond of friendship as they embark on an emotional and harrowing journey.
Despite taking years to be completed and with the high expectations from the gaming community, Ueda, in an interview with GameSpot, said that “The Last Guardian” was designed to be “timeless, something that was going to last a very long time.”
“The Last Guardian” will be released by Sony exclusively for PS4 on Dec. 6.
