Vanessa Williams has recently been added to the cast of The Good Wife Season 7 to add more star power to the drama when the show returns to CBS on October 4.
Williams was cast as recurring character Courtney Boalt, who is described in the brief as “an extremely successful, self-made businesswoman, who is potentially interested in backing Peter Florrick’s (Chris Noth) campaign for president.”
She could also be Eli Gold’s (Alan Cumming) latest romantic interest as the CBS brief suggested a “mutual connection” between the two characters, reported EW.
According to Executive Producers Robert and Michelle King said they are both excited about the unlikely pairing.
“There are very few names you can put side-by-side that make you laugh. Alan Cumming and Vanessa Williams are at the top of that list. We couldn’t be more excited,” the duo said.
Aside from Williams, there will also be other new cast members joining the show in the wake of series regulars Archie Panjabi and Matthew Goode’s departure.
Among the newbies to the series are Jeffrey Dean Morgan who will play investigator Jason Crouse, who may possibly be Alicia’s news romantic interest; Peter Gallagher, Cush Jumbo and Margo Martindale, who will be playing Peter’s campaign operative Willa Eastman. Michael J. Fox will also reprise his character as Louis Canning and he has been promoted to series regular.
According to an Entertainment Weekly report, Season 7 will see Alicia embracing her independence from her husband and her firm, but as is custom with the show, there will be challenges that she needs to face, including dealing with Peter’s ambition to seek the vice presidency.
“One of the things Peter can [use as campaign leverage] is a marriage that went to the brink and now is happy although reality is different from public perception. Peter knows, without Alicia, he’s just a John who overpaid for a hooker,” said co-creator Robert King.
