'The Following' news: Season 4 may not happen with Kevin Bacon working on 'Tremors'; fans petition for the show to return

It seems like Fox’s crime procedural series “The Following” will not have a follow-up after the last installment officially wrapped up, but this did not stop viewers from hoping that the fourth season may still be in the horizon.

Fans took it upon themselves to petition for the series’ return as they set up a Facebook page called Save The Following. They are also using the platform to voice out their opinions suggesting they need a sequel and show their love for lead actor Kevin Bacon who played Ryan Hardy.

One of the users even created a fan-made video that serves as a fictional trailer for the new season. However, it has already been taken down.

According to a previous report by TV Line, after the two-hour series finale, the network cancelled the show seemingly because of a decrease in ratings.

The freshman run reportedly drew out around 10 million viewers and an average of 8 million with a 2.6 demo rating across the season while the second one has averaged 5.2 million and 1.8, yet scored an early pick-up. But the third season opened with only 4.8 million per 1.6 demo rating and averaged barely around 3 million and 1.1 million, which was deemed to be the lowest rated non-CW program on Monday nights.

Some reports claim that the ratings may have started to decline when the narrative killed off Joe Carroll (James Purefoy), the criminal mastermind that the FBI has been chasing around. Without the character that has been built up through time, viewers are said to wonder how the plot may continue.

It seems like Bacon may also has moved on with the show as he landed the role for a new TV movie titled “Tremors.”

Neither Bacon nor Fox have commented on the matter.
