Portrayed by James Spader, Raymond “Red” Reddington is certainly one of the show’s most interesting characters. What are his motives? What is the relationship between Red and Elizabeth “Liz” Keen (Megan Boone)? What about Red and Katarina Rostova (Lotte Verbeek)? Viewers have been asking these questions for a while now. However, it looks like season 4 of “The Blacklist” will finally shed some light on the mysterious Red.
In an interview with Digital Trends, “The Blacklist” creator Jon Bokenkamp has this to say about Red in the upcoming season: “He’s this sort of chameleon who’s always shifting and changing. We’re getting closer and closer to understanding him, and the Cape May episode was a good example of that. But he’s still somewhat of an enigma to us and that is part of what makes the show fun.”
During the interview, Bokenkamp says that there will be more betrayals in the new season. He also mentions that there will be new Blacklisters “who are going to be as strange and unique and dangerous.”
In other news, “The Borgias” alum Verbeek would be coming back as Rostova for season 4. Rostova was Liz’s biological mother, and Red saw her in a vision when he was grieving over Liz’s death. Of course, it was eventually revealed that Liz was only faking her death in an attempt to stay away from Red. Perhaps viewers would find out the truth this season on whether Rostova really died or she faked her own death like her daughter.
Season 4 will also focus on Red’s rivalry with Alexander Kirk, played by Ulrich Thomsen. Kirk claims to be Liz’s biological father, and his relationship with her may increase the animosity between the two rivals.
Season 4 of “The Blacklist” will premiere on Thursday, Sept. 22, at 10 p.m. EDT on NBC.
