'Switched at Birth' season 5 updates: Episode 5 called 'most ambitious and outside the box' episode; executive producer reveals storyline

“Switched at Birth” will be returning for season 5 on April, promising a very “ambitious” fifth episode, aside from answering the cliffhanger that the show left for fans at the end of season 4.

Last week, executive producer Lizzy Weiss said that episode 5 is the “most ambitious and outside the box” episode that they have for “Switched at Birth.” She shared that it is still untitled as she is having a hard time making one, given the sensitivity of the topic.

One week after, Weiss announced on her Twitter account what episode 5 will focus on, specifically on campus racism. The story will start off with a white student going to a costume party as the black rapper Lil Wanye. Although the white student may not have any bad intention, this will spark the anger of the African-Americans in the campus and will lead to a rally.

Weiss said, “That’s the point in the story where we realized we needed to shift perspective entirely and let our black characters lead their own story… We see the entire episode from their points of view,” reported ABC news.

Weiss has been active in hyping and updating the fans with the upcoming season. Last month, she revealed on the same social media page details about the upcoming season. She hinted the titles for episodes 2, 3, and 4, which are “This Has To Do With Me,” “Surprise,” and “Relation of Lines and Colors,” respectively.

Back in November, she also hinted that the first episode of season 5 will be titled “The Call.” In the finale of season 4, Bay (Vanessa Marano) received a call from someone at home. Fans were left uncertain as it may just be a simple call, but it seemed that there was something more, as executive producer Weiss teased in her caption, “And so the journey begins…”

This sparked speculations and rumors from fans including theories of a possible upcoming divorce between Kathryn (Lea Thompson) and John (D.W. Moffett) or a plea for help from Toby (Lucas Grabeel) and Lily (Rachel Shenton) for their newborn baby. Nonetheless, fans will have to wait until April to find out for themselves.
