'Supernatural' season 12 premiere spoilers: Is Mary Winchester really alive?

Just before long running series “Supernatural” ended its 11th season last month, the show was able to plant a possible huge story arc for its upcoming installment. While nothing is set in stone yet, rumor has it that the resurrection of Mary Winchester (Samantha Smith) will play a pivotal part in season 12.

For its last installment, the thriller was able to deliver more than what fans had expected. It delivered complex storylines including the comeback of Lucifer (Mark Pellegrino), the rise to power of Amara (Emily Swallow), the shocker that revealed Chuck Shurley (Rob Benedict) was actually God, and of course the eventual return of the Winchester matriarch. All of these arcs were perfectly peppered throughout the season, on top of Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean’s (Jensen Ackles) weekly adventures.

Moving forward, it appears that there will be a lot of Winchester family moments in the foreseeable future as Mary is now depicted as a living character. However, some fans are still skeptical about her rise from the dead. A running theory suggests she is nothing but an apparition of some sort to help the brothers in their future adventures.

Outside of the family, Castiel (Misha Collins), who is lurking on the sidelines, may also make his presence more felt as a potential threat. Collins expressed his eagerness to utilize the character as a double agent who will once again get on the good side of Sam and Dean only to sell them out in the end.

“The writers keep inhibiting Cas’ powers in some way or another … Sam and Dean don’t have this magic bullet they can solve all their problems,” the 41-year-old actor told Bustle. “I would love it if there was a little stretch where he could possibly be the powerful ally that he was and just play it a little bit before somehow hobbling him again. It’s been awhile since Cas has been just the ally at full power that he once was.”

Speaking of Castiel, a fan theory from Reddit has been drawing attention as it suggests that the Angel together with Crowley (Mark A. Sheppard) will form a tag team of their own, reminiscent of the Winchester’s.

“Supernatural” season 12 will premiere on Oct. 13 on The CW and will continue to air every Thursday night, 9 p.m. ET.
