'Suits' season 6 spoilers news: New season picks up right where season 5 ended; show could continue to season 8

The sixth season of popular legal drama “Suits” will pick up right where the last season left off, creator and showrunner Aaron Korsh has revealed.

“Suits” aired its season 5 finale on Wednesday, March 2. In the episode titled “25th Hour,” Mike Ross (Patrick J. Adams) sacrificed himself so that Jessica (Gina Torres) and Harvey (Gabriel Macht) wouldn’t have to go to prison. The genius college dropout/faux lawyer pleaded guilty to fraud charges and took a two-year prison deal, trading in his designer duds for a bright orange jumpsuit.

As Korsh told The Hollywood Reporter, prison is where viewers will find Mike when the new season premieres later this year.

When asked whether or not season 6 will begin with a time jump, the “Suits” boss answered, “We’re coming back right where we left off.” According to Korsch, the season 6 premiere, as it is currently being planned, will begin with Mike’s first night in jail and the first night back at Pearson Specter Litt, when his colleagues return to find the firm empty. “We’re coming back to the very night that we ended the episode on,” he said.

The “Suits” showrunner also talked about the reasons behind Mike taking the deal, knowing that he would, in effect, be blowing up the law firm.

Though he admitted that he’s unsure if Mike knew the consequences of his decision, Korsh said that Mike did what he did in order to save Jessica and Harvey. “He cared about the firm a lot, but they can possibly rebuild the firm and their lives,” the “Suits” creator said. According to him, though the writers initially pitched that Mike would cut the deal to save the firm, he insisted that Mike would do it to save his colleagues. “I think it will be put in the script again in [episode] 601,” he revealed.

While “Suits” has been renewed for a 16-episode season 6, the question of whether or not the series is nearing its end still remains.

But as Korsh recently told TVLine, “I just renewed [my deal with Universal Cable Productions] for two years, so I’m assuming we’re likely to have a season 7, and it’s certainly possible we’ll have a season 8.”

“Suits” is expected to return for season 6 later this year on USA Network.
