As has been previously reported, Jared Leto took his method acting to extreme levels while filming the upcoming supervillain team-up film “Suicide Squad.”
The actor, who makes his cinematic debut as the Joker in the film, takes over the role from the late actor Heath Ledger, whose portrayal of the crazed supervillain in Chris Nolan’s “The Dark Knight” (2008) earned him a posthumous Oscar for Best Actor in a Supporting Role.
As Viola Davis, who also appears in the film, told Vanity Fair earlier this year, Leto handed out several “really horrific” gifts, including a live rat and bullets, to their “Suicide Squad” co-stars while they were shooting the film. He also had a henchman come into the rehearsal room with a dead pig, scaring the actress.
Margot Robbie, who plays another crazed supervillain – Harley Quinn – in the film, recently revealed that though she was initially disgusted by the rat, she eventually came to like it.
In an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, the Australian actress said: “At first I was like this is disgusting. It jumped out at me, so I got a fright and got off to a rough start.”
But after several people told her to just get rid of the animal, she decided to keep it instead and got the rodent a “sweet little playpen, a slide, a hammock and all this stuff.” She also got the rat a leash so that she could walk it to the “Suicide Squad” set.
But though Robbie enjoyed her time with the rat, she ultimately had to give it away. “He found a really comfortable home with Guillermo del Toro,” the actress admitted.
In 2015, the “Pacific Rim” director told Collider that he was keeping the rat as a pet. “The rat is living with us in Toronto and he, and his massive ballsack, provide the house with great cheer and joy!” he said. “We have re-named him Venustiano.”
In February, del Toro posted a photo of the rat, perched on his shoulder, on Twitter.
Meanwhile, though no one yet knows how “Suicide Squad” will do at the box office, it appears that a sequel for the much-anticipated DC Comics-based film may already be in the works. In a report about a new David Ayer thriller that will star “Suicide Squad” actors Will Smith and Joel Edgerton, The Wrap mentioned that the two actors may also be working on the next “Suicide Squad” film, which may be released in 2017.
“Suicide Squad” hits theaters on Aug. 5.
