“Star Wars” franchise actor Mark Hamill has reiterated his previous statement that, in his opinion, Luke Skywalker’s sexuality is open to interpretation.
In a recent interview with The Sun, Hamill, who has played the “Star Wars” protagonist Luke Skywalker since the first film was released in 1977, said that Luke’s sexuality should not factor into how fans of the film series see the character.
“Fans are writing and asking all these questions, ‘I’m bullied in school… I’m afraid to come out.’ They say to me, ‘Could Luke be gay?'” Hamill said. “I’d say it is meant to be interpreted by the viewer. If you think Luke is gay, of course he is. You should not be ashamed of it. Judge Luke by his character, not by who he loves.”
The actor has previously spoken out about Luke’s sexuality and said similar things about his famous character. In January, Hamill responded to a Twitter query from a “Star Wars” fan, saying, “Luke is whatever the audience wants him to be.”
Though Luke is not in a relationship with anyone in the “Star Wars” films released thus far, there is speculation that he may be the father of “The Force Awakens” character Rey (Daisy Ridley).
Fans will have to wait for the next film in the sequel trilogy, “Star Wars: Episode VIII,” to find out if there is truth to this fan theory. The current trilogy is set 30 years from the events in “Return of the Jedi” (1983). Could Luke have fathered a child (or more) in that gap?
Speaking of supposed “Star Wars” relationships, Ridley recently spoke to Entertainment Tonight about having to keep the “Star Wars” secrets from the general populace. According to the actress, the funniest thing about it was having to deal with the widespread assumption that her character Rey is Han Solo’s (Harrison Ford) daughter.
“We were keeping this wonderful magic alive. And it paid off!” she told ET.
As it turned out, the big secret in “The Force Awakens” was that Solo would meet his demise in the film. The question of Rey’s paternity is still up in the air.
Is Luke Rey’s father? Is Luke gay?
“Star Wars: Episode VIII” may reveal the answers when it hits theaters on Dec. 15, 2017.
