'Star Wars Battlefront' DLC release date, news: 'Rogue One' content arriving just in time for holidays

Alongside the release of “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” in a little over a month is a slew of merchandise tied to the anthology film. This includes a special expansion pack for the “Star Wars Battlefront” video game that will enlist players in an exclusive virtual reality mission.

Dubbed as “Star Wars Battlefront Rogue One: X-Wing VR Mission,” the game which is described as an extension of the main game takes place in the same time period as that of the prequel. It offers players the opportunity to pilot one of the most iconic vehicles from the lore in the X-Wing in a more immersive setting.

During GamesCom 2016 last August, Criterion Games producer James Svensson revealed a couple of tidbits of what can fans look forward to in the game, more so since “Star Wars Battlefront” already rolled out a somewhat similar perk of being able to pilot an X-Wing via the Death Star DLC. Considering, however, that the upcoming add-on will be played in VR via the PlayStation VR headset, he cited that the level of technology they used for the “Rogue One: X-Wing Mission” will make it very impressive.

“Frostbite allows us to deliver the best looking game on PSVR and we were able to leverage the latest rendering technologies from across EA. But also, the positional audio on PlayStation VR is awesome there’s a point where everything looks and sounds good enough and your brain is tricked into believing what’s around you,” he stated.

The all-new VR experience will be free for all owners of the main game but will come solely for PlayStation VR.

Aside from the “X-Wing Mission,” another tie-in to the aforementioned movie will be the final expansion pack for the Season Pass, “Rogue One: Scarif.” The new content will let players take control of the Gareth Edwards film, Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) and Orson Krennic (Ben Mendelsohn).

Both the “Star Wars Battlefront Rogue One: X-Wing VR Mission,” and “Rogue One: Scarif” are expected to come sometime during the holiday season. More likely, they will be rolled out near the release of “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” which will hit theaters on Dec. 16.
