The filming of Star Trek Beyond has been confined indoors for quite some time now. However, recently it has gone outdoor, where a sneak peek of the new characters and costumes were seen.
Screen Crush got exclusive footage from the set, where Captain James Kirk (Chris Pine) and Ensign Pavel Chekov (Anton Yelchin) are wearing a new outfit that sports a utilitarian mix of blue and yellow Starfleet jackets, along with kneepads and boots. Their costumes are similar to the suits in Star Trek Enterprise in terms of color, while design-wise, they look quite comparable with the Star Lords from Guardians of the Galaxy, observed Hollywood Reporter.
Along with Pine and Yelchin, Simon Pegg, who plays Lieutenant Commander Montgomery Scott, or simply Scotty, was also seen in the cast, but he was wearing their traditional red uniform. In addition, the three men are joined by Sofia Boutella, whose character in the film is still unknown, appearing to be part of The Enterprise and also wearing the new suit. The set started off with Captain Kirk and the character of Boutella emerging from a damaged spacecraft.
The storyline of Star Trek Beyond is still vague, but director Justin Lin revealed before that “What we experienced in the TV show hasn’t been touched on yet. That sets up an opportunity for exploration and the deeper you go, the more you are examining humanity. Those are the things that I absorbed as a kid and hope to tap into,” noted Screen Crush.
Pegg, who also co-wrote the script with Doug Jung, said that they tried to modify the theme a bit from the traditional Star Trek films, “Let’s make a western or a thriller or a heist movie, then populate that with Star Trek characters so it’s more inclusive to an audience that might be a little bit reticent,” reported the same portal.
Other characters who are expected to join Star Trek Beyond are Idris Elba as the film’s new villain, Joe Taslim, Lydia Wilson, Deep Roy as Keesner, along with Star Trek veterans Zachary Quinto as Commander Spock, Zoe Saldana as Lieutenant Nyota Uhura, Karl Urban as Lieutenant Commander Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy, and John Cho as Lieutenant Hikaru Sulu.
The film is anticipated on the big screen on July 18 next year.
