Nintendo’s hit third-person cartoony shooter for the Wii U console, Splatoon, just got a new free downloadable content (DLC) pack, available now. The new DLC pack features a new Ranked Battle mode called Tower Control.
With the new free update, Nintendo deviated from the usual release pattern of an add-on content for a game. Usually, developers and publishers will announce an upcoming content at least weeks, or months prior to its release, with only a handful of game people offering a free DLC to their fans. But Nintendo did the different by announcing the arrival of a free update just a day before its release.
In the official Tumblr blog of Splatoon, the June 30 post announced the July 1 release of the new free content. “Tomorrow, on 7/1 at 7 PM PT, a new Ranked Battle will be added to the game!” it said. “This new mode is called Tower Control. Hop aboard the tower placed in the middle of the map, and ride it to your opponent’s goal. Stay sharpyou’ll have to protect whoever’s riding the tower from enemy attacks!”
Tower Control pits players on a tower that starts moving towards the enemy team’s goal. The tower that first arrives at the enemy goal point during the given limited time wins the game, or the team that gets the closest to the goal.
Excited fans were able to take a first look at the new content through the Nintendo Treehouse: Live with Splatoon Tower Control live streaming. A first look at how the new Ranked Battle works was also made available over Twitch.
Previously, the most recent DLC brought to the game two new weapons. Announced through Nintendo of Europe, the last free content update brought two new weaponsthe Carbon Roller and Custom Dual Squelcher. The update was made available on June 26, 7 p.m. Pacific / 10 p.m. Eastern.
