The wait is finally over as the release date for the highly anticipated season 2 of Freeform’s “Shadowhunters” has been revealed. It will premiere on Jan. 2, 2017 at 8 p.m. ET.
The schedule was announced by the cast and crew during their participation in the recently concluded New York Comic Con. According to TV Line, there was additional good news shared by the production team aside from the date of the premiere actor Paul Wesley will be directing one of the episodes in the second installment.
In a shout-out video showcased during the event, “The Vampire Diaries” star shared his excitement to work behind the camera.
“I can’t wait to try something completely new an entirely new genre that I really know nothing about; exploring the world of vampires and warlocks and werewolves. I’m gonna have to do serious research, some really heavy lifting here,” he said.
Promotional photos for the sophomore season also unveiled the look of returning cast. These include Katherine McNamara as Clary Fray, Dominic Sherwood as Jace Wayland, Alberto Rosende as Simon Lewis, Emeraude Toubia as Isabelle Lightwood, Matthew Daddario as Alec Lightwood, Harry Shum, Jr. as Magnus Bane, and Isaiah Mustafa as Luke Garroway.
Joining the mainstays is actress Alisha Wainwright for the role of werewolf Maia. She is described as a bartender at the Hunters Moon and a new member of Luke’s pack. She uses jokes and sarcasm to mask her complicated emotions due to having a troubled past. With Valentine (Alan Van Sprang) possessing the Mortal Cup, she will be forced into battle despite not wanting to resort to violence.
Based on the official description released by the network, the Shadow World will be in upheaval as Valentine and The Circle continue to grow stronger. Meanwhile, the Shadowhunter team quickly becomes disillusioned with The Clave and their reaction to the recent events that transpired.
“Loyalties will be tested, unlikely bonds will be made and relationships will be pushed to the limit as the Shadowhunters and their Downworlder friends make their way in a new world,” the synopsis continues.
