'Scandal' season 6 air date, spoilers: First teaser reveals explosive season premiere

The first look at ABC’s political thriller drama “Scandal” season 6 is here, featuring all of the fan-favorite characters in what will surely be an explosive premiere installment.

Kerry Washington who portrays protagonist Olivia Pope took to Twitter to announce that, “#Gladiators! Mark the date! The world premiere of @ScandalABC’s Season 6 trailer is coming on 11.03.16!!!”

In the 10-second clip that the actress shared, several interesting scenes are previewed including Fitzgerald Grant (Tony Goldwyn) looking really stressed and another one with him as he consoles Olivia, Abby Whelan (Darby Stachfield) walking up to something mysterious, and Huck (Guillermo Diaz) and Quinn Perkins (Katie Lowes) almost getting themselves blown up when a cabin in the woods suddenly explodes.

Details for the follow-up narrative remain under wraps but TV Line notes that the season premiere will take place on the night of the election. Moreover, Jake Ballard (Scott Foley) will have a slightly different looking wife in the new run. It turns out that due to her commitment to another show, Joelle Carter who made her debut at the end of season 5 as Vanessa Moss will not be able to return. Taking over the role is “Glee” alum Jessalyn Gilsig.

Series creator Shonda Rhimes also confirmed earlier this year that episode 1 reveals who between Mellie Grant (Bellamy Young) and Francisco Vargas (Ricardo Chavira) has been elected as the new president.

Season 6 of “Scandal” was postponed due to Washington’s pregnancy. Instead of being launched in fall, the show was moved to midseason and will premiere next year. The series’ star gave birth to her second baby named Caleb Kelechi Asomugha in October.

“Scandal” season 6 is set to air on Jan. 19, 2017 on its regular Thursday slot at 9 p.m. ET. The number of episodes has been reduced from the usual 22 to 16 installments.
