Archie’s mother has returned in “Riverdale,” and it’s kind of troubling.
In the latest episode, Fred (Luke Perry) flew to Chicago to finalize his divorce, leaving Archie (K.J. Apa) alone. Betty (Lili Reinhart) and Veronica (Camila Mendes) persuaded Archie to use his house for Jughead’s (Cole Sprouse) birthday party.
The party seems to be chaotic when Cheryl (Madelaine Petsch) showed up with Chuck’s (Jordan Calloway) friends. Additionally, Jughead’s estranged father, F.P. (Skeet Ulrich), with Betty’s invitation, joined the merriment.
However, when Fred came home, he was with Mary (Molly Ringwald), Archie’s mother.
Speaking with Entertainment Tonight, Perry, 50, admitted that he felt scared for his character. He hinted that Archie’s mom may have brought some sad tidings to their family.
“It took Fred a really long time to be OK with that and to sort of rise to that challenge of single parenthood, and now that could all go away and come crashing down, which would leave this guy without an identity because that’s what he’s all about,” he explained.
On the other hand, the actor who plays Archie felt the opposite.
“I think for Archie, he loves both his dad and his mom,” Apa said. However, he added, “but I reckon there’s definitely a part of him that wants his parents — for a minute — to get back together again and he can see his mom being home again in Riverdale.”
The episode also showed the burgeoning romance between Veronica and Fred’s son. The two shared a passionate kiss.
Apa teased that the lovebirds will have something going on in the future.
In the upcoming episode, Betty gets caught in the middle of Homecoming and Reunion. Also, Alice (Madchen Amick) wants her to assist with Jason’s (Trevor Stines) investigation. In order not to burden her daughter too much, Alice works alongside Archie and Veronica, but Betty gets mad when she finds out about it.
After seeing him at the party, Jughead wonders if it’s time to give F.P. another chance.
As for Fred and Mary, they attend the Homecoming dance, which gives the former to take a second look at divorce.
“Riverdale” returns on April 27 on The CW.
