'Reign' season 3 spoilers, release date: Mary returns to Scotland in April?

Mary Stuart (Adelaide Kane) could be returning to her homeland in the midseason premiere of “Reign.”

With the return of season 3 just over a month away, information about the second half of the historical fantasy series’ third run is still scarce. Nevertheless, recent reports claim that the first episode of the third season’s back half will see Mary going back to Scotland.

A recent Instagram post by Kane, who stars as Mary, Queen of Scots in The CW’s popular TV romance, has been taken as a major hint that Mary will soon make the decision to return to Scotland. In the photo posted by the actress, she is dressed as her “Reign” character and is sitting by a castle window. Kane captioned the photo, “Queenie in the castle… But which castle?!#dramatic #thatdresstho”

The last time Mary appeared in “Reign,” the royal was having trouble finding a suitable consort to help her deal with her enemies in England. But with her kingdom starting to turn against her, Mary had few choices and a dwindling hope of victory. The queen’s predicament when fans last saw her makes Kane’s tease of a “castle” all the more intriguing.

The question of where fans will find Mary will be answered when “Reign” season 3 returns to The CW to air “Succession,” the 11th episode in the current season. According to reports, the rest of the show’s current run is already written, with the “Reign” writing team confirming earlier this month that they have finished the script for the entire season. In a photo posted on the “Reign” writers’ official Twitter page, the group announced, “That’s a wrap on writing #ReignSeason3! What an amazing season. We can’t wait for you to see the rest!”

Catch the next episode of “Reign” when it debuts the back half of its third season on Monday, April 25, at 8 p.m. on The CW. The series takes over the timeslot of “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend,” which will have wrapped up its first season by then.
