'Red Dead Redemption 2' release date update: PlayStation Meeting or Gamescom 2016 as the game's launch event?

“Red Dead Redemption” fans have already been in an anticipative mood since Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick teased earlier this year that they had something big coming in this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3). But excitement quickly turned into gloom as “Mafia III” took the spotlight instead. What worse is that the sequel for the western action adventure game continues to be a mystery as Rockstar Games has yet to reveal anything specific about it.

For those who are still hoping that the game developer is looking to release “Red Dead Redemption 2” in a sneaky way, two events may be the perfect platform to do so. One is Sony’s PlayStation Meeting next month, while the other one is the ongoing Gamescom 2016 in Europe.

It has already been reported that there is buzz with regard to Rockstar utilizing next month’s PlayStation Neo launch as “Red Dead Redemption 2’s” introduction. But while that will not happen in a couple more weeks, the launch can also take place at Gamescom. Now being held in Cologne, Germany, Europe’s biggest annual video game trade fair can also be a good place to announce the highly anticipated sequel.

In Take-Two and Rockstar’s defense for the continued absence of “Red Dead Redemption 2,” “Grand Theft Auto” is pretty much their biggest profit draw currently. This is improved by the highly popular online mode for the game. Zelnick was even quite forthcoming about it.

“We’ve made no mystery of the fact that Grand Theft Auto Online continues to exceed expectations, and this holiday season was the best period ever, in terms of active users, consumer spending and the revenue from concurrent consumer spending. And that has a positive impact on our results,” he told MCVUK.

However, he also reiterated that they are not just a “Grand Theft Auto” company, which means that they are still keen in developing other existing franchises like “Red Dead Redemption” and even branching out with new properties. This is backed up by Take-Two’s recent fiscal report revealing that they are working on creating exciting properties that will be launched soon.
