Torrey DeVitto sheds a light on her enigmatic character Melissa in “Pretty Little Liars” and what the future lies for her characters especially with the show’s upcoming seventh season
With the big reveal of Mary Drake (Mary Drake) in the mystery thriller’s season 6 finale, most of the attention of viewers of the show has been redirected to the potential threat that the character will bring. Safe to say, some longstanding characters were pushed to the sidelines a little bit with a little bit of spotlight shining in on them. However, Devitto shares some new tidbits that might make fans carefully revisit her character.
“It’s really interesting, every time I go in I feel like she changes script by script,” the 31-year-old actress told Entertainment Tonight. “Once I feel like I’ve got a grasp on her, something new comes about. I’ve been playing this character for six years and I feel like I’m constantly learning new things about her.”
Despite this, Devitto stands by Melissa saying that while she has had some questionable actions and decisions, she only has good intentions as her motivation.
“I think she has good intentions, just kind of goes about things the wrong way sometimes,” she explained.
In the past six years, Melissa has butt heads with her younger sister, Spencer (Troian Bellisario) numerous times. However, she later proves that she can be trusted when she buried Bethany Young (Jessica Belkin) alive in an effort to protect Spencer. Given that she already has a tendency to cross boundaries for the sake of her loved ones, will it also be possible that she can purposely kill someone again like how Charlotte’s (Vanessa Ray) death is seeming to be pinned on her?
“You never know,” she coyly teased, not giving anything away, “I think, on this show especially, anything is possible.”
Furthermore, she adds that with a show like “Pretty Little Liars” who is notorious with some plot device to perfectly stage a shocker, fans would have to be more vigilant in piecing the story together.
“I think they set things up so that you get distracted from what could potentially be the truth,” she explained, “This show is like a jigsaw puzzle, you’re constantly trying to put it together and the pieces just don’t fit.”
“Pretty Little Liars” season 7 will debut on Freeform on June 21 at 8 p.m. EST.
