Lionsgate reportedly has started the audition for the actors and actresses who will suit up for the reboot of the highly popular franchise, “Power Rangers.”
According to Variety, sources shared that some up-and-coming actors are being tested out for the Ranger roles of Jason as the Red Ranger, Zack as the Black Ranger and Kimberly as the Pink Ranger.
For the first ranger who leads the Mighty Morphin squad to their fight against alien forces, actors KJ Apa from “Shortland Street,” Austin Butler of MTV’s “The Shannara Chronicles” and Mitchell Hope from “The Descendants” are said to be in the running. Jason is known for his tyrannosaurus zord and sword as his signature weapon.
Meanwhile, for the commander of mastodon zord and the one who uses a battle axe, the energetic Black Ranger may be portrayed by Daniel Zovatto of “It Follows,” Ross Butler of “” or Brian ‘Sene’ Marc of “Major Crimes.”
Moreover, the only ranger who wears a battle skirt and commands the pterodactyl zord with bow and arrow as weapon of choice, Kimberly’s part may currently either go to Naomi Scott of “The Martian” or Stephanie Scott of “Insidious 3” and the “Jem and the Holograms” movie.
The studio is said to be currently looking for other celebrities to fill up the roster of other three remaining rangers and may probably hire a big name for the role of the new villain but offers have not been made yet.
Taking the helm as the director is Dean Israelite as they tackle the reimagining of the origin story that sees six high school students discovering their extraterrestrial powers and will be united to save the world against outside threats with the aid of mechanical vehicles known as Zords.
The latest script penned by Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz are currently with Haim Saban, Brian Casentini and Allison Shearmur who are producing.
Power Rangers reboot is slated to hit the theaters on January 13, 2017.
