Viewers of AMC’s “Fear the Walking Dead” were in for a surprise last Sunday when during the airing of the second season finale, the first trailer for the new installment of the “Pirates of the Caribbean” film franchise was showcased. Titled “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales,” the teaser was just as intriguing as it was surprising because the main protagonist, Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) is nowhere to be found.
Variety is under the impression that the absence of Depp’s character in the teaser does not necessarily mean he’s completely out of the movie. According to the entertainment publication, his presence was still felt. The upcoming film will be about him desperately running away from a pursuit courtesy of a crew of ghost pirates led by Sparrow’s old rival, Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem). Salazar’s pirate ship managed to get out of the Devil’s Triangle and is on a mission to eradicate all pirate competition along the way. Sparrow, on the other hand, will be in dire need of help in order to have a chance at defeating Captain Salazar.
In spite of Depp’s recent marriage and personal life troubles, not to mention the hand injury he suffered during filming in Australia, there never really was a doubt as to him reprising the role of the iconic pirate. He did undergo surgery that temporarily put a halt to the production, but with the new teaser, it certainly looks like everything is going as planned.
Aside from Depp and Bardem, the upcoming film will also feature Brenton Thwaites as Henry, Kaya Scodelario as the astronomer Carina Smyth, and a couple of returnees in Geoffrey Rush as Captain Hector Barbossa and Orlando Bloom as Captain Will Turner.
“Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales,” directed by Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg, is scheduled for a worldwide release on May 26, 2017.
