“Outlander” has found its Lord John Grey. It has been confirmed that Starz has cast the actor who will play the pivotal role in season 3, taking over the role first played by Oscar Kennedy in season 2.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Lord John Grey will be played by David Berry. The Australian actor’s credits include roles in several TV shows, such as “Home and Away” and “A Place to Call Home.”
In Diana Gabaldon’s “Outlander” novels, Grey is a former British soldier turned Ardsmuir Prison governor who befriends the incarcerated Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan). Grey first ran into Jamie and Claire (Caitriona Balfe) when he was just a teenager, and when the two men meet again, Jamie will be in prison along with the other Scots who were part of the Jacobite rebellion.
According to the official description by Starz, the character is “a steadfast and honorable British subject, torn between a finely-honed sense of familial duty and a strong moral compass of right and wrong.” Grey is said to be boyishly handsome with an upper class rearing, but a scandal from his past has relegated him to an undesirable position as governor of a prison in Northern Scotland.
In the books, Grey befriends Jamie, but secretly wants the Scot as his lover. Jamie spurns his advances and does something drastic to sever the bonds of their friendship. Later, an unexpected event brings them back together and their friendship is renewed. Claire also gets to meet Grey and though at first she is wary of his intentions, he becomes a friend to her as well.
Season 3 is based on Gabaldon’s third book titled “Voyager” and will see Jamie’s time in prison, as well as Claire and Jamie’s time apart. The new installment will also feature the pair’s emotional reunion after being separated for 20 years. It is expected that the reunion scene won’t take place in the first episode as the show will explore what being apart means for Jamie and Claire. After Claire travels through time to find Jamie, the two will go on a voyage across the seas and their journey takes them to the Caribbean, and later, the New World.
“Outlander” season 3 premieres in 2017 on Starz.
