'Outlander' season 3: Caitriona Balfe teases Claire and Jaime's separation, will reunite as different people

With Starz’s historical drama “Outlander” season 2 heading to a close, lead actress Caitriona Balfe gives a preview of what is in store for the next seasons.

Talking to Los Angeles Times, Balfe who portrays Claire shared that no matter how long she and Jamie (Sam Heughan) may be separated, the couple will always find their way back to each other.

“I think that they’re soul mates; they’re meant to be together. We’re going to see them apart again and we’re going to see how that affects them each individually. That’s something I’m really looking forward to in season 3,” she teased.

The network recently announced that the show has been picked up for both season 3 and season 4. The former will be based on author Diana Gabaldon’s third book in the “Outlander” series titled “Voyager” while the latter will adapt the fourth book, “Drums of Autumn.”

In a separate interview with Entertainment Weekly Radio, Balfe hints that following the novel’s storyline, Claire will find herself being split between two timelines again. “Part of it will be with Frank, which I find that storyline very complex and very interesting to play, but I’m really excited to get back to the reunion with Jamie and what the new discovery of a relationship is going to be,” she said.

She explained that having spent many years being separated, the two have to get to know each other again. They will also have to relearn how to love the other and accept who they are now because they may become very different people.

Although they will be adapting the original source materials, executive producer Ronald D. Moore told Bustle that fans should expect some elements of the series to veer away from the version in the books. Some new details will be added such as the incarnation of Rupert and Angus as a duo and their portrayal of Frank.

“Certain plot lines then take on a life of their own. Certain characters change and you have to follow the way they change. … Those changes add up and the further in you go, the bigger those separations become,” Moore concluded.

The network has yet to schedule the premiere of season 3.

Meanwhile, the second season is currently on its 11th episode titled “Vengeance of Mine.” It is slated to air on Saturday, June 18 at 9 p.m. ET on Starz.
