As previously promised, “Droughtlander” will not be as prominent this off-season for “Outlander” fans with a slew of new details making it online teasing viewers of what lies ahead.
In Entertainment Weekly‘s first look at season 3 of the period drama, Caitriona Balfe who plays the heroine, Claire, shared that the narrative will feature the parallels of her life with that of Jamie’s (Sam Heughan) throughout the years they spend apart. Back in season 2, a significant time jump of 20 years had Claire, now widowed from first husband, Frank Randall (Tobias Menzies), go back to Scotland. Alongside Claire was her daughter with Jamie, Brianna (Sophie Skelton). During Claire’s quest to retrace her journey with her star-crossed lover, she stumbled upon the information that Jamie did not die in the Battle of Culloden as she originally believed.
“For the first few episodes, we’re going to show the parallel journeys that Jamie and Claire took during their 20 years apart from one another,” the actress said, hinting that her much-anticipated reunion with Jamie is nowhere near.
Meanwhile, Elle caught up with Heughan during an event celebrating his latest collaboration with clothing line Barbour where the dashing Scot also dished on “Outlander’s” strong third season.
“There’s a lot that happens in it,” Heughan teased. “So much time passes by 20 years the characters are apart and together again, so there’s some big emotional stuff.”
So far, fans have yet to see Jamie after two decades as much of the time jump was seen from Claire’s perspective. But given that the upcoming installment will be based on Diana Gabaldon’s third novel in the “Outlander” series, “Voyager,” significant changes are also expected for the Highlander. For starters, it was confirmed that Lord John Grey would be making an appearance and the role would now be played by David Berry. A pivotal friendship between Jamie and the future governor of Ardsmuir Prison in Scotland, where the latter is supposed to be detained based on the books, is to be expected.
“Jamie has to age I’m not giving away how. But I think it’s less about looking older and more about the experiences he’s gone through,” Heughan furthered on the changes that will be coming his character’s way. “I spend hours in makeup anyway, because I’m always covered in mud or blood. You can still see makeup on my nails here. It just won’t come off. I’ve spent the last two weeks on a battlefield.”
Unfortunately, despite the seemingly lax security regarding “Outlander” season 3 spoilers, the exact return date of the drama has yet to be disclosed. However, it is expected to don the airwaves of Starz once again in 2017.
