With a brand new life looming ahead of them, Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire (Caitriona Balfe) continue to spend more time apart. It looks like the separation will only continue in this week’s episode of “Outlander” titled “Useful Occupations and Deceptions“
The couple is currently pulled apart by their respective jobs with Jamie trying to learn as much as possible in terms of the inner workings of politics, while Claire finds her brand new niche as a nurse. Unfortunately, it will seem like Jamie is not very happy with his wife’s decision to embark on a new job given her pregnancy.
“His frustration I think under another circumstance he would understand her happiness in finding this place and he would understand her need to go and work there,” Balfe explained to The Hollywood Reporter on the subject of Jamie being overprotective of her character. “His frustration I think under another circumstance he would understand her happiness in finding this place and he would understand her need to go and work there.”
On top of Jamie trying to balance his role in changing the course of history and making sure that his growing family is safe, the major cliffhanger back in episode 2 titled “Not in Scotland Anymore,” will also be touched in the upcoming installment of the period show. Fans can expect Claire to go back and forth on whether to tell her husband the fact that Black Jack (Tobias Menzies) is still alive. Shall she decide to let his husband know, it can potentially trigger trauma from his last encounter with Black Jack in season 1.
Heughan described Jamie as a “man of the time” explaining the term as someone who does not want to open up about the distressful life changing events. Instead, he would rather bury the psychological trauma that his contact with Black Jack caused him.
“The mental side is new to him. He doesn’t think about it and just busies himself. He gets drunk so that he doesn’t have to deal with it, but it does come back to haunt him. Ultimately, it forces Jamie and Claire to be less intimate because he’s closing up and not talking about it,” the Scottish actor continued explaining. But while Jamie refuses to open up about what happened may put a strain on his relationship with his wife, Heughan revealed that they will be able to work things out.
“Outlander” season 2 continues to air every Saturday on Starz.
