“Orange Is the New Black” pulled off a shocker just before season 4 drew to a close via the sudden death of fan favorite character, Poussey (Samira Wiley). Unfortunately for fans who are still grieving the loss of the chatty inmate, it appears that the Netflix show has no plans of easing up on the characters. Rumors suggest that more deaths and riots should be expected next season.
While this could dampen the spirits of loyal viewers of the dramedy, there is a legitimate reason for the said decision. As part of the show’s efforts in continuing to mirror real-life events, “Orange Is the New Black” aims to continue telling stories that are highly relevant in today’s society, one of which is police brutality to people of color.
It can be remembered that Poussey’s death was due to a prison guard cutting her air pathway until she suffocated to death. Just before that, she was taking part in a peaceful protest inside the penitentiary.
Wiley has acknowledged that her demise in the show comes at a time when several high-profile killings have once again drawn so much controversy and even further fueled the “Black Lives Matter” movement.
“It was something that we definitely did to echo things that have happened in the past with Eric Garner, Michael Brown,” the actress recently told Mic.com in a sit-down interview. “To have new names since we filmed that thing, Alton Sterling and the recent deaths, it’s unfathomable to think that we would still have new names that we need to remember. People are really upset about Poussey. But I want people to be really upset about what’s happening in the real world.”
Meanwhile, as followers are still reeling from the shocking twist, the girls left at Litchfield seem to be back in business. Danielle Brooks, known for portraying Taystee, updated her Instagram with a photo of herself in her inmate gear with the caption, “It’s like I never left the joint son.”
No official return date has been set for “Orange Is the New Black” season 5, but fans can expect it to be available for streaming on Netflix by June 2017.
