'Orange is the New Black' season 5 spoilers: More prison riots; new characters to be introduced?

If there is anything that the previous season of “Orange is the New Black” has proven, it’s that the show is not one to pull punches when it comes to killing off its characters, beloved or not.

“Orange is the New Black” season 5 is expected to pick up on the tension generated by the death of fan favorite Poussey Washington (Samira Wiley), which was the unexpected season 4 finale twist that left fans fearing for the fate of the other Litchfield Penitentiary inmates. Poussye’s death is rumored to cause more prison riots that could then lead to more character deaths, and not even the show’s main character, Piper Chapman (Taylor Schilling) is safe.

PopSugar observed that although Piper served as the viewer’s initial access point to a life in a women’s federal prison, her personal story has since been overshadowed by the other inmate’s storylines. This has led to inevitable questions about Piper’s survival in the upcoming season.

“Orange is the New Black” is roughly based on the memoir of the same name written by Piper Kerman, on whom Piper Chapman has been based. After a successful first season run, the series has since taken on a life of its own, far removing itself from the original source material, so although Piper Kerman is still alive and well, there is a chance that Piper Chapman will not be long for this world.

With every death comes a new inmate, and “Orange is the New Black” is expected to introduce new characters when its fifth season kicks off. Additionally, Laverne Cox, who plays Sophia Burset, will be reprising her role in a more prominent capacity after her character spent most of the previous season in solitary confinement. Previous guest stars are also expected to return to add more tension to the show.

“Orange is the New Black” has been renewed up to a seventh season with series creator Jenji Kohan at the helm.

“Here’s to keeping it interesting. Thanks, Netflix!” Kohan said in a statement following the renewal.

“Orange is the New Black” is scheduled to stream on Netflix in 2017, quite possibly on any Friday in June based on Netflix’s usual schedule in releasing new shows.
