“Orange is the New Black” season 5 is happening.
Rumors about Netflix cancelling the show have been spreading since false information about it was posted online. However, the filming for the highly anticipated fifth season is still under way, and the three seasons’ worth of renewal previously awarded to the series is still pretty much in effect. “Orange is the New Black” will live on all the way through to its seventh season. How it fares beyond that will depend on the upcoming season’s performance on the ratings board.
In fact, Danielle Brooks, who plays Tasha “Taystee” Jefferson, just posted a set photo on Aug. 26 captioned, “Home. @oitnb,” disproving rumors that the show has been put in the can.
Meanwhile, Netflix has recently aired a teaser trailer for “Orange is the New Black” season 5, showing a hand that is about to be smashed, prompting fans to worry about Piper Chapman’s survival. Will the show’s main protagonist, portrayed by Taylor Schilling, meet her end in the next season?
The previous season saw the death of one of the show’s most beloved characters, Poussey Washington, played by Samira Wiley, which showed fans that “Orange is the New Black” writers are not above killing off a character in order to advance the show’s storyline.
In a recent interview with The Muse, Adrienne C. Moore, who plays Cindy “Black Cindy” Hayes, said that the creative minds behind the series were not ones to play it safe when it came to their storytelling.
“To them, what’s more important is the conversation that’s sparked because of a show like Orange, not [that] the show is popular,” Moore said.
So if and when it happens that Piper’s death can serve a higher storytelling purpose, the writers will not be pulling any punches about it, especially since series creator, Jenji Kohan had previously told Variety that “Orange is the New Black” is an ensemble show and not just about a single person.
“Orange is the New Black” returns to Netflix in the summer of 2017.
