Jenji Kohan, the creator and showrunner of “Orange is the New Black,” has enlisted Matthew Weiner to direct an episode for the show’s upcoming fourth season. Weiner, the creator, writer and director of “Mad Men,” and Kohan are reportedly longtime friends.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Laura Prepon, who plays the role of Alex in “Orange is the New Black,” said, “We filmed a huge day on Sunday, and a lot of directors might have been overwhelmed by that, but he wasn’t and he knew exactly what he wanted to do. With a huge cast like ours, when you have a director who knows exactly what they want, it makes everything go a lot smoother. I love Matt he’s awesome.”
Weiner, likewise, loved filming the episode, according to THR’s source.
This development seemed to have surprised the fans and the TV media who are familiar with how the director works behind the camera. He has reportedly admitted to being a control freak, which, as Realty Today puts it, he follows a strict “one way model” when it comes to directing, which is, his way.
Fans and critics are excited to know whether or not Weiner will be able to bring the same excellence that he brought to “Mad Men.” This new development with “Orange is the New Black” is interesting enough as this is the first time Weiner is directing something that he has not created or written himself.
Apart from “Mad Men”, Weiner also directed “Are You Here” in 2013, with appearances from Jack Black, Owen Wilson, and Amy Poehler.
On another hand, Netflix has not released the statistics of how successful “OITNB” is in terms of ratings. “Mad Men,” meanwhile, was a great hit when it concluded with its last episode just a month ago.
Netflix has also not yet officially announced the season 4 release date of “Orange is the New Black,” but many fans expect it to be available in summer next year as all three previous seasons have also been released during this time.
