Don’t expect Emma (Jennifer Morrison) to be dark for too long, although this will be one of the main storylines to be explored by Once Upon a Time when the show returns for its fifth season, where a darker, more evil villain is expected to wreak havoc on the lives of Storybrooke residents.

It can be recalled that at the finale of Season 4, Emma took the hit and made the ultimate sacrifice of embracing the darkness so Regina could finally get her happy ending.

Of course, this means that the Emma who will return to the show this fall will be completely different from the show’s main heroine that fans have come to love for the last four seasons. This would mean also mean that the lovelives of the characters will all be affected by the transformation, reported Hypable.com.

One of the main pairs to be affected by the Darkness is definitely Hook and Emma, as Hook tries to figure out a way to save his lady love from being completely consumed by evil. Emma’s parents will also have to deal with watching their daughter struggle with the darkness which they fought so hard to keep away from her in her first place.

Rumplestiltskin, who served as the series main villain for the better part of the show’s run, is also expected to work through his relationship issues with his love interest, Belle.

Despite Emma’s sacrifice, Regina and Robin are still far from their happily ever after and their romance is expected to be rough as they deal with Zelena’s pregnancy, among other issues.

In an interview with show creator Adam Horowitz and Eddie Kitsis, they assured that one of the main missions of the team will be working hard to bring Emma back to light in Season 5.

Kitsis told zap2it that in order to save Emma from being completely consumed by evil, the gang needs to find Merlin because the sorcerer is the only character who has the knowledge to banish the darkness.

In a separate interview with Josh Dallas who plays David Nolan, aka Prince Charming, he teased that Season 5 will introduce a meaner and more evil villain to the show.

“The new big baddie is going to be really bad. It’s the unimaginable. It’s the worst thing that could possibly happen. It’s going to be tough for everybody. It’s going to be distressing for fans.”

Based on the show’s finale, speculations are rife that the next season’s main villain is going to be Zelena, the Wicked Witch of the West who is still embittered about her foiled plan to entrap Robin Hood.
