The sixth season of “New Girl” will make its debut in a few weeks, and when the show returns to FOX, Nick (Jake Johnson) will be getting some much needed advice from Winston (Lamorne Morris) on how to maintain a long-distance relationship with Reagan (Megan Fox).
In the season 5 finale, CeCe (Hannah Simone) and Schmidt (Max Greenfield) got married, and Jess (Zooey Deschanel) realized that she was still in love with Nick. However, it seemed as though a Jess and Nick reunion wasn’t in the cards as Nick told her that he was going with Reagan to New Orleans and that he will be staying with her for three months.
Showrunner Liz Meriwether spoke with Entertainment Weekly to preview the new season, revealing that after Nick gets back to the loft, Winston will give him some tips on how to have a great long-distance relationship with Reagan since he is in the same situation and doing so well with Aly (Nasim Pedrad).
“Winston has become a master of the long-distance relationship and has all these technological gadgets and tricks that make him an amazing long-distance boyfriend,” said Meriwether. “Obviously, that’s not really Nick’s thing, so he’s struggling a bit more.”
The season 6 premiere titled “House Hunt” will pick up three months after the season 5 finale, and since then, Jess has been trying to forget about her renewed romantic feelings for Nick by throwing herself into new hobbies, while Cece and Schmidt go house hunting. As for Winston, he attempts to keep up a long-distance relationship with Aly. The episode also marks Deschanel’s directorial debut on the series.
The new season will have its first-ever crossover episode. “New Girl” and “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” will have a crossover event on Oct. 11, and Meriwether told Deadline that it will “proudly and humbly go where few shows have gone since the 1990s.”
“New Girl” premieres on Tuesday, Sept. 20 on FOX.
