Tonight will be the last day in the office of “very special agent” Tony DiNozzo Jr. in “NCIS” as Michael Weatherly readies to exit the show in the final episode of season 13.
The chapter is expected to pull the heart strings of long time fans who have seen the character grow over 10 years. But while Weatherly refuses to give anything away on how Tony’s exit scheme will be, he promises that by 9 P.M. tonight, everybody will be mind boggled on how the story was concocted.
In a promo for the last two installments with Weatherly, one already aired last week, a montage of old and brand new sequences have been put together where Tony gets an emotional goodbye from his colleagues.
One notable scene is that of Tony and his longtime supervisor, Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Mark Harmon). The two hugged each other, while Gibbs tells the best young agent he ever worked with to take care of himself.
Showrunner Gary Glasberg has previously revealed that there will a scene with Gibbs and Tony which will definitely be a shining jewel in the episode not just because of the history between the two characters but how the actors pulled it off.
“People should absolutely be planning on some really serious, heart-wrenching moments. There’ll be tissues involved,” Glasberg said. “I’m very proud of the emotional resonance of what this is, even in terms of what we’re filming right now in the finale.”
As for Weatherly, the actor shared that he “discovered an aspect of DiNozzo that had never been revealed before.”
“I didn’t recognize Michael Weatherly at all, and very little Tony DiNozzo, It was more like DiNozzo to give Gibbs (Mark Harmon) mouth-to-mouth resuscitation than this thing he does in the final episode,” he added referring to his last few scenes in the show.
In a separate interview with Extra, Weatherly detailed that a “part of him dies” continuing that there will be “sudden death,” but did not drop any hints on who it could be. Whether this is just wordplay or not, it is interesting how it will all come into play in tonight’s episode.
Despite leaving the Washington Navy Yard, Weatherly leaves the door open in terms of stepping back into Tony’s shoes, be it in “NCIS” or its spin-offs. At any case, fans can agree that the character will be sorely missed when next season breaks ground.
Do not miss “NCIS” season 13 finale tonight, at 8 P.M. EST on CBS
