'Mr. Robot' season 2 spoilers: no hollow storylines for upcoming installment

With only less than a month before breaking ground on its second season, fans of “Mr. Robot” are already on the edge of their seats, waiting to find out what happens next in the hacker-themed show. While the overall scheme of things have definitely been teased in a couple of trailers, Rami Malek delves deeper into his character’s upcoming story plot, explaining the recent events that will affect Elliot.

“For this character and story to be as provocative as it was in the first season, we can’t rest on our laurels,” Malek told Collider in a recent sit down discussing the next installment of the show.

As previously reported, “Mr. Robot” season 2 will attempt to tackle both ends of the spectrum as they go grander in scale, they will also try to tell in the story in a more personal way. What was supposed to be a simple hack against E Corp blew up to be a bigger issue as it led to the disruption of the U.S. economy. At the same time, creator Sam Esmail’s planned narrative will also tell the backstory of Elliot and how his past and present condition will more likely determine his future.

“They’re grounded in the story that Sam [Esmail] has created, with the trajectory and arc of all of these characters. I happened to know where he was headed this season, so I took some big changes and I think the audience will be rewarded by them. Maybe they’ll end up on the editing floor, but that remains to be seen,” he continued

While the actor could not give away anything major as the thrill of the unknown is part of “Mr. Robot’s” charm, he reassures fans of one thing everything that will go in the story will eventually make sense.

“I would say it’s multi-dimensional and extremely layered,” Malek stated adding that there are no hollow plot points incorporated for the sake of the glamorous shtick value. “Everything that is a surprise or a moment is just an evolution of who these characters are and where the story is going.”

“Mr. Robot” season 2 will premiere on July 13, 10 p.m. ET on the USA Network.
