'Mr. Robot' season 2 news: Real-life hacker finds flaw in promo site; more back stories, new characters set to be unveiled

A white hat hacker going by the alias Zemnmez discovers a vulnerability on the “Mr. Robot” season 2 promotional website just shortly after its launch. The vulnerability found is known as a cross-site scripting (XSS) flaw.

As part of its creative marketing campaign, the USA Network, home station of “Mr. Robot,” launched the promo website whoismrrobot.com for the returning TV series. The site features a short overdubbed video clip of President Barrack Obama speaking from the White House Press Briefing Room about a fictitious threat to national security the fictional hacktivist group “fsociety” headed by “Mr. Robot” (Christian Slater). Obama appears to be saying, “We can confirm that Tyrell Wellick and fsociety engaged in this attack. They caused a lot of damage, and we will respond.” The interface of the website appears like the typical hacking environment as it cleverly simulates a combination of Linux command line and Internet Relay Chat (IRC) wherein typing in pre-approved commands “fivenine,” “join,” “archive,” etc. lead to different results.

The site’s weakness was immediately rectified after it was reported to “Mr. Robot” writer Sam Esmail. Zemnmez confirmed that the site anomaly was indeed patched.

Zemnmez told Forbes through an e-mail that the glitch he found could have been used to steal users’ Facebook information particularly the part of the website that contains a quiz that needs access to players’ Facebook data.

Meanwhile, filming of the series is continuously happening. As per official synopsis issued by the USA Network, “Mr. Robot” season 2 will pick up after fsociety’s 5/9 hack on Evil Corp and will explore the consequences of this attack. It will also highlight Elliot Anderson’s (Rami Malek) emotional journey and show the implications of the crime he committed in the first season.

New faces will be seen on the show. Grace Gummer will play the part of FBI agent Dominique DiPierro. Craig Robinson will also join the cast as Ray, a local in Elliot’s neighborhood.

On the other hand, Stephanie Cornelissen has been promoted to series regular. She plays the cold Joanna Wellick whose new love interest in the next season will be Derek (Chris Conroy). Fans can also expect to see more of Michael Cristofer who plays Evil Corp executive Phillip Price.

Proving to be rigorously preparing for the brand new “Mr. Robot” season, Esmail has consulted with the FBI Cyber Crime unit whose input he will incorporate into the show in order to make the plot more realistic.

“Mr. Robot” season 2 premiere episode will air on Wednesday, July 13, at 10 p.m. EDT.
