The much-awaited TV comeback of “Mr. Robot” is almost here and while the show boasts of its knack for suspense and the unknown, it could not stop its lead stars from teasing fans on what they should expect when the show returns for its sophomore run.
Rami Malek, who plays socially anxious hacker Elliot; Carly Chaikin as Elliot’s sister and co-hacker from fsociety; Darlene, Portia Doubleday as Elliot’s friend and Allsafe colleague; and Christian Slater as the titular role Mr. Robot all appeared during the show’s panel last Monday. The event, which was covered by Variety and held at the Metrograph in New York, had the four thespians talk about transitioning to season 2 and working with creator Sam Esmail.
All four actors admitted that they initially felt pressure as they started to dip their toes in to the second year run of “Mr. Robot,” especially after the incredibly positive reception that their debut season had. Since breaking into the small screen last year, the show had taken the world by storm with its unique premise. Fortunately, any trace of doubts coming into production was immediately dissipated once they were in the presence of Esmail, who appeared to be on top of everything.
Esmail, aside from overseeing the show and writing all the episodes, will also assume directing duties for the entire season, which is comprised of 10 intense episodes.
“We were presented, when we came back, with a phone-book sized script and we all got the opportunity to sit around a table for two days and read through the whole season, and that just doesn’t happen,” Slater revealed. “It was very unusual, so everything about this whole experience has been unique and very exciting.”
The “Mr. Robot” actors were very cautious during the press junket. Malek admitted that they would get into deep trouble should they accidentally reveal something. Despite this, Slater cautioned “Mr. Robot” loyalists to “buckle in,” which means that the upcoming iteration of the hacking-centric show will be a more thrilling ride than its debut season if that is even possible.
“Mr. Robot” season 2 will premiere on July 13, 10 p.m. ET on the USA Network.
