Just when The Gladers thought they have escaped the nightmare that is the Maze, things get hotter as they are once again put to the test, this time with Phase Two of the Trials.
Thomas (Dylan O’Brien), Minho (Ki Hong Lee), Newt (Thomas Brodie-Sangster), and the rest of the surviving Gladers return for Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials, the sequel to the hit 2014 dystopian adventure.
In Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials picks up right where the first movie ended.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, film director Wes Ball explained: “It’s really fun, actually… these characters are going to find themselves run in a whole new kinds of obstacles and it has the same kind of intensity and fun as the last one, but it’s just going to a whole new world with a whole bunch of cast of new great characters.”
In a separate interview with Zap2it, Ball explained how The Scorch differs from the world of The Maze. “The Maze Runner was about two or three sets. This is about a dozen. We have lots of different really cool locations setting the score. It’s just kind of desolated ruin of our modern world ruined by sand. It’s a very different set piece. It’s going to be fun seeing our cast going through that journey,” he said.
Regarding the changes in the story compared to the books, fans who are familiar with the source material would easily spot from the trailer major differences on the take of the story compared to its literary counterpart. Author James Dashner talked about this with Collider.
“I go in assuming that there’s going to be changes. I don’t have a problem with that. That’s how you translate the experience of a book into the big screen, it’s by making changes,” he said.
The first 30-minutes of the film were screened exclusively to lucky attendees at the recent San Diego Comic-Con.
Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials opens in theaters September 18.
