“Maze Runner: The Death Cure” has not been cancelled but fans would have to be a little bit more patient with its production as it is still on hold after lead star Dylan O’Brien’s on-set mishap earlier this year.
Unlike O’Brien’s small screen project “Teen Wolf” which is also in production for its sixth season, the third iteration in the movie trilogy does not have any choice but to wait for the young star to finally recuperate after his accident back in March. But with the lack of official updates from insiders, fans have recently started to tinker on the possibility that maybe the movie has already been cancelled altogether.
Films such as the “Maze Runner” franchise bank so much on their fandom for a good showing at the box office. Needless to say, the timing of the rollout is also very important as executives do not want to release them so close to each other to prevent story fatigue but not too far that interest from its followers has already dwindled down. With books within the same genre pouring out from publishing companies, it is only a matter of time when readers would have to pick their new favorite series and devote their interest on it.
Despite this, 20th Century Fox stands by their plan to push back “Maze Runner: The Death Cure” with a timetable solely dependent on O’Brien’s condition.
“The resumption of principal photography on ‘Maze Runner: The Death Cure’ has been further delayed to allow Dylan O’Brien more time to fully recover from his injuries,” the film studio’s previously published statement reads. “We wish Dylan a speedy recovery and look forward to restarting production as soon as possible.”
While the injuries were presumed to be non-life-threatening, there are a couple of wounds that still need to heal completely especially given the demands of filming a post-apocalyptic flick. His injuries include sustained facial fractures, a concussion, and lacerations the result of an accident while shooting a vehicular stunt in Vancouver, Canada. O’Brien plays Thomas in the trilogy which was supposed to conclude with “The Death Cure.”
“Maze Runner: The Death Cure” is currently scheduled for a January 12, 2018 theatrical release.
