MacBook Air 2016 release date, specs: New 13-inch and 15-inch laptops to be released in August?

Apple fans are waiting to see whether the tech giant will release a new MacBook Air this year. With the success of the 11-inch and 13-inch laptops which were released last year, tech watchers are expecting the same or even better devices to be launched sometime next month, with possibly minor updates and a more powerful central processing unit (CPU) encased in thinner and lighter shells.

According to Techradar, some of the changes that might take place this year is the retirement of the 11-inch MacBook Air and the debut of a 15-inch model instead. The website reports that the 15-inch variant, along with a new 13-inch laptop, will be announced at an Apple event in August, separate from the iPhone 7’s launch in September.

The media outlet reports that the Economic Daily News predicted last year that a significant refresh of the MacBook Air line will take place in 2016. EDN’s sources claim that the new laptops will be significantly thinner and lighter than the current models, with new batteries and cooling systems, Intel Skylake processors, and the USB-C port.

A slimmed-down and lighter shell for the next generation MacBook Air laptops will certainly be an impressive feat for the Cupertino-based company, given that the current models are already considerably thin at 0.68 inches. The 11-inch model weighs 2.83 pounds, while the 13-inch variant weighs 2.96 pounds. According to Techradar, the removal of all the old ports two USB 3 ports and a Thunderbolt 2 port and the addition of a USB-C port will help shave off a few millimeters from the laptops.

Rumors also predict TouchID fingerprint recognition and Retina display for both laptops, as well as an improved camera. The devices are also expected to have Siri, the virtual personal assistant found in iPhones. The upcoming MacBook Air laptops are also said to come with no physical keyboards and that touchscreen keyboards will be featured in the new devices. As for the price, it was predicted that the 13-inch Apple MacBook Air 2016 will cost $980, while the 15-inch version is said to cost about $1,120.
